The boom in green certifications

Green credentials are one of the most important factors in assessing a building’s fit for purpose. Sustainability is not just a priority for a building’s owners and investors, but also letting and maintenance agents, and of course, the building’s users.

Sustainability assessment tools like BREEAM® and LEEDTM may seem like relatively recent developments, but their application is not limited to new builds only. Increasingly, they are being applied to existing buildings as a way to identify potential opportunities to improve sustainability.

These internationally recognised certification systems – both of which Arup’s sustainable buildings consultants are highly-qualified to work with– take into account factors like the degree of pollution caused by the building in its environment, energy efficiency, water consumption, responsible management of generated waste, use of recycled materials and access to natural light.

Through BREEAM® and LEEDTM tools, Arup in Spain offers a comprehensive service to certify the sustainability of buildings.

LEEDing the way

With 41 LEEDTM certifications achieved in the last years, our sustainable building team in Madrid has established itself as industry leaders in sustainable building design and consultancy in Spain.

Coca-Cola’s and Dieageo´s headquarters in Madrid, The Tripark Business Sense office building in Las Rozas, Zielo Shopping Centre in Pozuelo de Alarcón (both Hines), Cristalia Building in Madrid (a group of corporate buildings from Gmp adn Merlin Properties) and several stores from the Inditex Group (Zara in Barcelona, Melbourne, Rome, London, Paris and Munich; Pull & Bear in Rotterdam and Madrid; Bershka in Valencia and Berlin, Massimo Dutti in Madrid and Mallorca; a data centre in Arteixo and a logistics centre in Torderá) are some examples that have attained LEEDTM Gold and Platinum certifications.

"Sustainable development has increasingly become a priority and a must for the construction sector. There are also tangible benefits: a sustainable building is a building that meets a number of specifications for quality and environmental care much higher than the one without such qualification. This leads to an increase for the building´s market value, and helps to improve the image and corporate social responsibility of owners and occupiers".

Arup’s dominance in sustainable building consultancy also extends to the number of LEEDTM accredited staff. At the time of writing, Arup’s LEEDTM Accredited Professionals numbered over 250 worldwide, including 13 based in Madrid. Each accredited consultant is also a qualified specialist in complimentary disciplines including environmental and energy consulting.
