Liverpool is a city with a rich history, from its glory days as a major trading centre in the 19th century to being named as European Capital of Culture in 2008.

A showcase for urban regeneration, Liverpool is the only UK city to have a dedicated pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010. Arup is supporting the Liverpool Pavilion, situated in the ‘Urban Best Practice’ area for the six months of the Expo.

Within the city centre, Arup has been involved with a number of major developments, including a new home for BBC Radio Merseyside, celebrity hairdresser Herberts new salon and offices (voted as Liverpool favorite new building in 2008), and a unique footbridge as part of the newly opened ‘Liverpool One’ scheme.

Other projects include University of Liverpool’s Engineering Restructuring Project and the redevelopment of the Victoria Building, the façade of which inspired the phrase ‘red brick university’.

Arup is also proud of its role in achieving the delivery of the Liverpool Canal Link extension. Working closely with British Waterways, the canal now follows the river and links with the Albert Dock – a major tourist attraction.

The infrastructure team have also been involved in the regeneration of two major parks, the Grade I-listed Birkenhead Park and Sefton Park in south Liverpool.
