Newcastle

The UK’s northern city of Newcastle has a distinguished industrial and trading past. Much regeneration has taken place in the last couple of decades and it remains a key northern city for education, business and culture.

Arup’s contribution to the city can be seen in projects like the state of the art research facility, Newcastle’s Cancer Research Institute (Academic Laboratory), a building that has been designed both for optimum energy consumption, and to facilitate change and future modification to meet the ever-changing needs of advanced research. We have worked on a number of the regions leading acute hospitals, many of whom have needed careful contamination and ground remediation as of result of the regions industrial past.

The recent BREEAM excellent rated international swimming complex – Sunderland Aquatic Centre - used the group's specialist sports knowledge to provide long term benefits in reduced energy, water and waste. Sustainability, planning and delivery are being used on more recent projects like the Scotswood Redevelopment. Other projects include the famous sculpture “the Angel of the North” by Antony Gormley, the redevelopment of Grey Street, Edinburgh and Newcastle Airport Control Towers, the Newcastle Quayside, the Metro system and the New Tyne Crossing.
