Madrid successfully hosts the first edition of Open House

30 Sep 2015

Last weekend, Arup took part in the first edition of Madrid Open House, one of the most important international festivals of architecture and cities in the world. The event attracted over 20,000 participants and more than 100 buildings opened their doors especially for the occasion.

Guided tours, workshops, photography contests and presentations were held across 12 districts of Madrid. The cultural offerings included the 'Arup Route', where buildings such as the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, La Casa Encendida, Coca-Cola HQ, the Palace Hotel, Madrid’s City Hall –also known as the Palace of Communications– and the new Zara store in Serrano street were exhibited.

"Many of these monumental buildings are closely linked to the history of the city and also to our history. Throughout these 20 years, we have worked on many of them and, through our design, have helped shape buildings that constitute the identity of Madrid."

Mark Chown, Group Leader, Arup

Open House is a free event aimed at promoting the understanding of the city and urban areas. It takes place during one weekend each year in over 30 cities around the world. For two days, dozens of buildings –that are usually not open to the public, or have restricted access– open their doors to the public.

The event was established 20 years ago in London and is organised in many different cities such as Rome, Oslo, Athens, Melbourne, Prague, Barcelona, New York, Dublin, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Helsinki, Chicago, Lisbon, Monterrey, Thessaloniki and Buenos Aires.
