James Duff, Arup Dublin, recognised as an Emerging Talent in the Irish Property Industry

14 Nov 2016

James Duff, a lighting designer in Arup’s Dublin office, won the Emerging Talent Award at the 2016 KPMG Irish Independent Property Industry Excellence Awards on 10 November 2016.

The KPMG Irish Independent Property Industry Excellence Awards highlight, reward and celebrate excellence in the Irish Property Industry. The Emerging Talent Award recognises an individual between the ages of 21-35 within the property sector who is excelling in their chosen discipline.

James is a designer and researcher and is considered a thought leader in his field, having produced a substantial body of research that is changing the direction in which lighting is designed for a typical building interior. His career has been split down two distinctly different, but related, paths. The first involves formally researching how humans interact with light and the second involves working as a lighting designer and actively establishing and promoting the profession of lighting design in Ireland.

James completed a part-time PhD at the Dublin Institute of Technology. His core research finding was the validation of a predictive model that estimates how people react to various types and quantities of light that is incident on their retina. Following this, he proposed a prescriptive methodology that lighting designers can follow to determine how much light is likely to land on a person's retina within a particular space, taking into account the lit and geometric environment of the space in question. This new methodology was shown to greatly increase subjective satisfaction with lit conditions, in addition to showing potential to reduce energy consumption when compared with current design approaches.

Lighting design, as a discipline, brings together art, science and technology. It is a relatively new discipline in the construction industry. In April 2015, James established a lighting team in Arup’s Dublin office. Since then, the business has grown to include a team of five people, with James leading them across a range of projects in various sectors, designing both daylight and electric lighting.

Arup’s Lighting Design team of over 90 lighting designers across nine countries consistently produces a high standard of work, which was recognised when they were awarded the Lighting Design Practice of the Year at the 2016 Lighting Design Awards. James is pioneering lighting design as a profession in Ireland and has received prior recognition for his success, when he was named as one of the '40 under 40', honouring the top forty lighting designers globally, under the age of 40.
