Arup has won four Grand Awards and six Merit Awards at the Green Building Awards (GBA) 2016.

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC), this biennale award is one of the highest accolades in Hong Kong recognising the concerted effort and commitment of the industry in sustainable built environment.

A total of 12 Grand Awards and 21 Merit Awards were selected by a renowned jury panel comprised of a broad base of academic and technical experts.  In addition, six projects were accredited with special citation.

The Hong Kong International Airport Midfield Concourse won the Grand Award in New Buildings – Completed Projects category. The project has incorporated 35 green initiatives to the design for delivering a sustainable high-performance building.  The jury was particularly impressed by the successful implementation of the three sustainability strategies namely, resource reduction, operational efficiency, and health and well-being, demonstrating admirable results in the design, use and construction of the project.

The Renovation of 1/F Main Block at APB Centre for Architectural Services Department was conferred the Grand Award in Existing Buildings – Interiors Category.  Sustainable and innovative design strategies, such as radiant cooling system, dimmable indirect LED lighting, automatic control for building systems, sustainable materials and flexible layout were integrated, transforming the office built in 1990 into a modern green and healthy workplace. This is the first BEAM Plus Interiors Platinum government office.

Climate Positive Urban Regeneration: Beijing New Shougang Development – Climate Positive Project Plan was awarded the Grand Award in Research and Planning Category. Recently endorsed as China’s first C40 Climate Positive Development Project, the 34ha pilot site experiments the idea of a low-carbon and sustainable urban development within the city of Beijing that includes elements like green buildings, clean energy, green transport, waste management, water resources, green spaces, heritage and rehabilitation of contaminated sites.

The Arup-invented Air Induction Unit (AIU) received the Grand Award in Building Products and Technology Category.  A ventilation device designed using aerodynamic principles, AIU induces continuous large volume air flows with gentle wind speeds to improve thermal comfort.
