EMC²’s Ireland Centre of Excellence

  • One of Europe’s most important ICT sites taking advantage of free cooling for > 8,500 hours pa.
  • A successful project delivery thanks to understanding of the manufacturing process and data centre requirements.
  • A challenging development which fits new technologies without affecting operations at the facility.

Following an energy utilisation feasibility report by Arup, EMC2 decided to undertake a full retrofit project to implement energy saving technologies at the information technology and data centre site in Ovens, Ballincollig, Co. Cork, using free cooling technology systems.

EMC2’s Ireland Centre of Excellence invested €2.5m in the energy saving project which was commissioned by EMC2’s Real Estate & Facilities and designed and managed by Arup. It will achieve annual electricity savings of 13 million kilowatt hours and an annual carbon emission reduction of 7,000 tonnes.

Arup designed bespoke engineering solutions for three data centres, ten ambient laboratories and four thermocycling test laboratories at the facility. Arup was also responsible for the multi-disciplinary concept and detailed engineering design, project and cost management, site support and for the inclusion of sustainable design from concept through to operation.

Under the direction of EMC2’s Real Estate & Facilities, Arup completed the engineering design, equipment procurement and tender process in five weeks. The main contract was awarded in early September 2010 and the project was completed by the end of November 2010, reflecting a timeline of just 18 weeks to design, tender, construct and commission.

This €2.5m retrofit data centre free fresh air cooling project was delivered on time, within budget and to the highest standard in collaboration with the EMC2 project team.

"This is a very significant project which makes a major contribution to EMC’s cost competitiveness and supports our environmental strategy"

said Bob Savage, Vice President, Managing Director EMC2.
