Forth replacement crossing

  • Understood to be the country’s largest ever transport consultancy contract.

The Forth Replacement Crossing will be the largest infrastructure project in Scotland for a generation and is understood to represent the country's largest ever transport consultancy contract.

One of the world's leading long-span bridge designers, Arup was selected as part of a joint venture with Jacobs Engineering UK Ltd to design, develop and project-manage a new cable-stayed bridge crossing the river Forth near Edinburgh. The new bridge will be located to the west, upstream of the existing Forth Road Bridge.

Arup’s team are providing a range of services including scheme appraisal, civil and structural design, geotechnics and environmental consulting, project management, risk management, procurement and programming, and construction services. The project will also use intelligent transport systems to help keep traffic moving, improve ssafety and reduce vehicle emissions.

Public transport flow and efficiency will be improved by the introduction of variable message signs and signalling to allow buses to use the hard shoulder on the approaches to the new crossing. This will be the first use of a controlled ITS environment in Scotland which uses variable mandatory speed limits, a parallel public transport route, bus lane hard shoulder use and above ground vehicle detection.

The driver experience will also be enhanced through the use of lane control signalling and an intelligent lighting control systems with features such as low height lighting to help illuminate the road connections.

At the heart of the scheme is a new Bridge Control Room and the Traffic Scotland National Control Centre (TSNCC), a strategic hub which controls and manages Scotland’s motorway and trunk network.
