Silesia City Center

  • Site reclamation of former coal mine with full renovation of the historical building.
  • Changing the abandoned post-industrial area into a modern and attractive meeting place for the local community.

Silesia City Center is a great example of redevelopment and land reclamation of one of the Silesian industrial areas. In  place of the defunct coal mine “Kleofas”, a shopping gallery was built, changing the abandoned post-industrial area to a meeting place for the local community.

Arup was responsible for pre-design studies, land reclamation design as well as for a multidisciplinary engineering design (and in Phase 2, also for executive architect services) starting from concept through building permit, tender, execution design and as-built documentation. During the construction works Arup performed author´s supervision role on site.

Transforming the area

Recultivation of the mine waste dump and renovation of the historical building were huge challenges and great opportunities to showcase the knowledge and experience that Arup bring to such projects.

The first stage of the development was built in 2005 and extended in 2010. Construction period for both phases was short indeed and demanded excellent cooperation of parties involved.

Currently, Silesia City Center comprises a shopping gallery, an entertainment part (cinemas, bowling, fitness, food court) as well as underground and deck car parks. The project is considered to be one of the largest site reclamation in the Silesian area.
