UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre

  • One of the first hospitals to achieve an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating.
  • Value engineering achieved savings of around £500k following innovations including the thermal de-rating of the fire escape staircases.
  • Project took 120 weeks to complete.

The UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, opened in April 2012, is the first of its kind in the NHS and redefines the way patients are treated, using the best diagnostic and treatment techniques to improve survival rates. Every detail has been designed around the needs of individual patients with more focus on the best treatments, well-being, rehabilitation, and cancer survivorship.

"This world class clinical facility has been delivered on time and on budget, to a very high specification. Completing a building of this size and complexity is a significant achievement."

- Sir Robert Naylor, Chief Executive, University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The centre is an outpatient facility only, and is linked to a new model of treatment. This means that patients who undergo treatment and have to return to the centre, over a period of two days or more, can either return home or be accommodated in a nearby hotel where they self-administer medication before returning to finalise their treatment.

The building provides environmental as well as clinical excellence. By making efficient use of natural light, and using an innovative glazing system the centre has met the newly announced NHS environmental targets eight years early, and carbon emissions have been cut by a third. The centre includes both a green roof and photovoltaic panels for on-site energy generation.

Arup provided both project management and SMEP engineering design services.

"Through my exposure of working with Arup on a number of highly complex projects, I have found them to be ‘hands on’, committed at all levels, client focused; providing a high degree of confidence that they will not let me down."

- Kieran McDaid, Director of Capital Investment, University College London Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
