New-build knowledge

Our fast-growing nuclear energy business offers specialist technical, engineering, consultancy and advisory skills from site selection and evaluation,  planning and environmental consenting to infrastructure delivery combined with previous large infrastructure project experience.

We work with local authorities, planners, contractors and developers to fully assess and optimise the layout of potential sites for new power stations. Our team advises on technical due diligence, planning laws and environmental impact assessments. They can help you find the best way to connect a new plant to the electricity network whilst supporting you in gaining all necessary licences, consents and approvals for the project. 

In the UK we’ve advised Sedgemoor District and West Somerset Councils on planning, environmental and infrastructure delivery for Hinkley Point C through the new Development Consent Order (DCO) process and we are supporting the UK Regulator’s evaluation of reactor designs proposed for the UK through their Generic Design Assessment process. We’re now working with a further two councils to assess two more proposals for new nuclear stations.

Our experienced engineers can undertake full seismic and geotechnical evaluation of a proposed site and we are currently evaluating the seismic hazard for Horizon at Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey. We’re also undertaking detailed design work for BYLOR on Hinkley Point C and have full capability in the design of civil structures, geotechnics, cooling water tunnels and site-wide infrastructure for new nuclear plants.

Throughout a major nuclear programme, clients can draw on Arup’s decades of experience delivering large infrastructure projects around the world.

Organisational development

Our consultants also work with nuclear industry organisations to streamline their operations and improve performance. For example, we helped British Energy design and implement the world’s largest organisational turnaround programme in the nuclear sector and we are engaged on the Sellafield Supply Chain Development Programme to support Sellafield in developing its supply chain and supply chain management capability.

We were one of the principal reviewers of the Nuclear Industry Association’s Supply Chain Capability Report to support new build and we are developing the knowledge management capability across the NDA estate.

Decommissioning and specialist technical skills

Nuclear decommissioning and clean-up has unique needs that demand specific skills, our specialists undertake the design and analysis of transport and storage packages for spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste. We also have expertise in the design and construction management of intermediate level waste and spent fuel stores and the design of radiochemistry laboratories.

At Sellafield, we’re working alongside Morgan Sindall as part of a £1bn, 15-year to transform the infrastructure across the site in support of decommissioning. Our team’s fresh thinking and masterplanning approach to the site-wide infrastructure is helping to safely, efficiently and cost-effectively clean up and decommission one of the most complex nuclear sites in Europe.

We are also helping NDA’s RWM division to tackle the engineering challenges associated with deep geological disposal whilst also developing the storage package solutions that will contain wastes within the repository.

As the oil and gas industry starts the North Sea decommissioning process there are parallels and learning from nuclear decommissioning. Our clients, including the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and the Oil & Gas Authority, benefit from the innovations and expertise we’ve developed across both sectors, in ensuring structures are decommissioned safely while returning maximum value to stakeholders.
